The First Question
The first test before an endurance race rarely gives a final answer.
It gives a direction.
At Watkins Glen, that direction began with Dan Griffin working through nine GT3 cars in controlled conditions. Each session used the same Static Weather setting. Same environment. Same question waiting at the end of every run.
Could this become the car for six hours?
That distinction matters. A single lap can make a car look better than it is. A timing sheet can point toward pace, but it does not always show how that pace was made. It does not show how hard the car was to place. It does not show whether the driver had margin left, or whether every tenth came with a warning label attached.
What the Glen Reveals
Watkins Glen has a way of exposing those details.
The lap asks different things from a car in different places. Turn 1 rewards confidence and rotation. The Esses need commitment and stability. The Bus Stop asks whether a car can take kerb without becoming a passenger ride. The Boot wants front end, patience, and traction. Then the long climbs and straights remind everyone that power and drag still matter.
A car can be fast at Watkins Glen for several reasons.
It can make time on the straights. It can rotate well in the slow corners. It can carry speed through the long middle section. It can brake cleanly. It can attack the kerbs. The problem is that very few cars do all of those things without compromise.
That was the lesson from the opening test.
“It seems there are a variety of options,” Griffin said, “and the options make their lap time differently.”
Three Cars Remained
The first shortlist formed around three cars: the Ford Mustang, the Aston Martin, and the McLaren.
The McLaren made an immediate case for itself by being composed. Griffin noted its long-corner grip and braking feel, two traits that tend to matter more as a race gets longer. It did not need to be dramatic to be convincing. It simply worked in the places where a driver needs the car to stay with him.
The Aston Martin was different. Its strength was front end, especially through the longer corners that define the middle part of the lap. The car could make up ground through the Boot, where commitment matters and hesitation is expensive. It was not as strong over kerbs and asked for more precision, but the pace was real enough to keep it in the conversation.
The Mustang Argument
Then there was the Mustang.
On paper, it was the fastest car in the test. But the more important note was not the lap time. It was Griffin’s description of the way the car responded.
“The Ford felt the most pliable and able to do what I wanted,” he said, “even if it wasn’t always straightforward.”
That is a useful sentence in endurance prep. Not easy. Not perfect. Pliable.
The Mustang made its time with low-speed rotation, particularly through Turn 1 and the 8–9 section. It could be made to turn. It could be worked with. It had the kind of speed that shows up clearly on a lap chart, but also the kind of responsiveness that gives a driver something to build around.
That does not make it the safe choice. It makes it the interesting one.
The car still has an edge. It can ask more from the driver than something calmer like the McLaren. It may need refinement before it becomes something comfortable enough for traffic, tire wear, and the slow mental grind of a six-hour race. But after the first round, if Griffin had to choose, he would choose the Mustang.
That was the first meaningful answer of the test.
Outside the Shortlist
The rest of the field started to separate itself behind that top group.
The Ferrari remained viable, but unfinished. The Lamborghini felt safe and close enough to keep developing, even if it lost time in slower corners. The Porsche was the disappointment. After recent Balance of Performance adjustments, Griffin expected more from it. Instead, it felt poor enough to fall out of the primary conversation.
The Corvette was more complicated. It was not dismissed for lack of potential. Griffin believed it was capable of better lap times, but Watkins Glen requires a car to survive elongated kerb strikes in key places. In clean air, maybe that risk can be managed. In traffic, with other cars forcing compromised entries and exits, that same behavior becomes harder to trust.
The Race Car Still Has to Be Built
That is the difference between testing a fast car and choosing a race car.
A race car has to work when the line is not ideal. It has to tolerate traffic. It has to forgive tired inputs. It has to keep its balance when the driver is no longer chasing a qualifying lap and is instead trying to repeat clean laps deep into a stint.
The stopwatch matters. It always matters.
But for the Watkins Glen 6 Hour, the stopwatch is only one part of the argument. The car still has to be livable. It has to be repeatable. It has to give enough confidence that the driver can focus on the race instead of surviving the car.
After the first cut, the Mustang is the direction.
Not the final answer.
The race car still has to be built.
